Job Description

The University of Kansas Department of Physics and Astronomy seeks to fill a Postdoctoral Researcher or Associate Researcher position in experimental high energy physics. Final position will be determined by education and research experience in the required areas. This position has an estimated start date of August 1, 2024, or as soon thereafter as the position can be filled (also negotiable). The initial appointment is for one year with the possibility of annual renewal for four subsequent years subject to the needs of the department and availability of funding.

Job Description

Postdoctoral Researcher/Associate Researcher job duties will include:
Conduct research in experimental high energy physics in collaboration with members of the University of Kansas high energy physics group and collaboration members world-wide. This entails participation in relevant facets of the overall research endeavor encompassing the life-cycle of high energy physics experiments, ranging from experimental design, feasibility studies, detector prototyping, detector R&D, detector construction, detector operation, data-taking support, detector calibration and alignment, detector modeling, detector simulation, physics event simulation, event reconstruction, data analysis, software development, publication preparation, proposal preparation, editorial work, presentation of results, outreach and career development.

50% - Analysis
  • Physics analysis of the CMS data.
  • Develop new techniques applicable to physics analysis.
  • Document, present, and publish research results.

40% - Group Contribution
  • Contribute to the group's responsibilities in the CMS experiment. Current responsibilities include contributions to the tracker project.

10% - Student Mentoring
  • Assist the faculty in guiding the group's graduate and undergraduate students.

Position Requirements

  • Work location: Onsite at 1082 Malott Hall, Lawrence, KS or CERN, in Geneva, Switzerland. Determination of location will be decided between department and successful candidate

Required Qualifications

For consideration as Postdoctoral Researcher:
Evaluation of the required qualifications and preferred qualifications will be made through (1) records of accomplishments entered in CV, (2) description of research and education experience provided in the application materials, (3) references, and (4) publications as appropriate.
  • A Ph.D. in physics by date of appointment.
  • Experience in experimental high energy physics or related experimental field.
NOTE: To be appointed at the Postdoctoral Researcher title, it is necessary to have the PhD in hand. Appointments made without a diploma or certified transcript indicating an earned doctorate are conditional hires and are appointed on an acting basis not to exceed 6 months.

For consideration as Associate Researcher:
Evaluation of the required qualifications and preferred qualifications will be made through (1) records of accomplishments entered in CV, (2) description of research and education experience provided in the application materials, (3) references, and (4) publications as appropriate.
  • A Ph.D. in physics.
  • Three years post-doctoral research experience in experimental high energy physics or related experimental field.
 


 

Preferred Qualifications

Postdoctoral Researcher/Associate Researcher
  • Experience in experimental techniques and software relevant to collider experiments.
  • Demonstrated experience in particle physics data analysis.
  • Demonstrated experience in particle detector design, development and operation.
  • Excellent communication skills as demonstrated in application materials.
