Job Description

SUMMARY:

The primary responsibility of this individual is to provide quality instruction to Western students enrolled in Commercial Driver Training classes taught at the main campus in Rock Springs and possibly college Outreach locations. Classes include, but are not limited to: Commercial Driver Training (Class A and B), Defensive Driving, Pre-Trip, and Log Book.

It is expected that this individual will accomplish assigned duties in an efficient, effective and competent manner, and strive for improvement and excellence in all work performed. Additionally, this individual must understand the comprehensive role of the community college and cooperate and work harmoniously with college personnel and the public. This individual must follow all college policies, rules, regulations and guidelines as they relate to this position.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES FOR WHICH THIS INDIVIDUAL IS ACCOUNTABLE

1. Provides quality instruction to students in assigned courses, to include: Commercial Driver Training (Class A and B), Defensive Driving, Pre-Trip, and Log Book courses.
2. Provides quality learning experiences for all students in accordance with their needs and abilities while maintaining the basic integrity of the course’s standards and objectives.
3. States clear objectives and criteria in each course syllabus; follows the Curriculum Committee’s guidelines regarding course syllabi; integrates appropriate Western Goals for Student Success into each course; evaluates students’ performance in light of these objectives and criteria.
4. Designs and implements effective learning processes for students; provides feedback on student improvement in attaining the College’s Learning Goals.
5. Learns to communicate clearly and effectively using the college network system, including the e-mail and calendar system, MyWestern, Canvas, and word processing; integrates learning with technology into the classroom as appropriate.
6. Refers students to the resources in the College Learning Center, Peer Tutor Center, NetTutor, Library, Mustang Success, and Wellbeing and Accessibility.
7. Maintains an inventory of all assigned equipment and supplies in assigned areas; takes prudent efforts to safeguard Western physical resources from unauthorized use. Maintains safe working conditions and practices.
8. Submits syllabi, student evaluations, grades, and other required information in a timely manner.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Education, Experience, Knowledge, and Abilities)

1. Current valid state-issued Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with proper endorsements, including Class A, with good driving record.
2. Three years of previous work experience in driving trucks with trailers.
3. Comprehensive knowledge of the concepts, technologies, principles and practices of Workforce Safety.
4. Knowledge of the concepts, technologies, principles and practices of the teaching of Commercial Driver Training, Defensive Driving, Pre-Trip, and Log Book courses.
5. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and administrators.
6. Ability to exercise sound judgment in all facets of the student-teacher relationship and to teach a diverse group of community college students.
7. Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills.
8. Academic Credential Options:
• If no degree beyond a High School diploma or the equivalent, must have twelve (12) years of discipline-specific training and tested experience.
• Associates degree combined with eight (8) years of discipline-specific training and tested experience.
• Bachelor’s degree in related field combined with four (4) years of discipline-specific training and tested experience.
Before beginning instruction, all Faculty are required to be current on any relevant professional certifications expected within their area of expertise. Faculty will hold all reasonable and relevant certifications as identified by the full-time faculty in the academic area.

Equivalency Statement
For those who do not exactly meet all the minimum qualifications, an equivalent combination of education and experience, which has provided comparable knowledge and abilities, may be acceptable.

PREFERRED ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS (Knowledge, Abilities, Education and Experience)
1. College degree or certificate in related field combined with four (4) years of discipline-specific training and tested experience.
2. Experience using active approaches to learning; experience using alternative methods of learning, such as interactive software, Internet, or individualized modular programs.
3. Demonstrated prior teaching experience is desirable.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

This position requires prolonged standing, sitting, walking, climbing and/or balancing, frequent bending, stooping, stretching, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and reaching. Position may require lifting up to 60 lbs., carrying, and pushing/pulling. Additional requirements include: eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity, ability to distinguish letters or symbols and the ability to use office equipment such as computer terminals, calculator, telephone, faxes, and copiers. Will be required to meet and maintain the standards of physical qualification for commercial driver fitness determination, including but not limited to hearing and vision requirements, health history and the body systems.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

May be required to work both inside and outside, day or night, be subject to temperature changes, extreme heat and/or cold, wet or dry and arid conditions. May be exposed to vibrations, fumes and dust encountered during the course of driving. While performing the duties of this position, the employee regularly works in classroom and in vehicle and may provide training at the employer’s work site as well as off site. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high. Travel off campus may be required.
