Director, Administration and Finance

Job Description

DIRECTOR, ADMINISTRATION AND FINANCE, Sociotechnical Systems Research Center (SSRC), to be responsible for day-to-day personnel, financial, and general operational management of the SSRC and the research units that rely on it for administration.  Will provide counsel and comprehensive support to the SSRC director, faculty, students, and other staff members regarding finances, personnel, operations, and other policy matters; oversee human resources, computing, space planning, strategic planning, and annual allocation submission and reconciliation processes; work with Institute for Data, Systems, and Society staff to ensure smooth operations; and supervise financial and administrative headquarters’ staff, including mentoring and career development planning.  Responsibilities include overseeing HR operations and personnel issues, e.g., hiring and onboarding, affiliate and visitor appointments, visa issuance/liaison, compensation, promotions, temp hiring, etc.; acting as primary liaison to Human Resources and the Dean’s Office to ensure compliance with MIT policy, processes, and external requirements; handling the annual budget and allocation rate planning processes; accountability for all aspects of pre- and post-award administration of all research, discretionary, and GIB funding; managing third-party vendor relationships; and collaborating on space utilization and planning for growth/contraction.  

Job Requirements:

REQUIRED:  bachelor’s degree; five years’ administrative experience in a university environment; excellent interpersonal, organizational, and oral and written communication skills; discretion; experience managing people and programs/projects; ability to build and mentor a strong management team; experience managing complex change and conflicting priorities; ability to meet deadlines, prioritize work, and handle details while maintaining a view of the big picture; and strong computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office.  PREFERRED: master’s degree in business, administration, or related field; KC, SAP, Atlas, and database experience; and HR experience, especially at MIT.  Job #24181-10
