The Whitaker Lab in the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at Johns Hopkins University is seeking a Lab Manager to oversee activities in our large and small animal laboratories. We perform state-of-the-art and innovative experiments using a preclinical neonatal rat and pediatric swine model to show different classes of anesthetics commonly used in children affect cerebrovascular function in different pathophysiologic states, including stroke. The overall goal of this research is to determine the vascular determinants of anesthesia-induced hypotension and to identify organ perfusion dependent definitions of hypotension in the setting of general anesthesia. Our group uses cutting edge, clinically relevant in vivo and in vitro techniques to evaluate the complex interaction of anesthetic agents, vascular physiology, blood pressure, and organ perfusion to establish best practices for intraoperative management in vulnerable patients. This research is part of an NIH NIGMS funded R35 program aimed at studying the above in animals at the extremes of age. The lab is also interested in perinatal stroke, and a series of experiments are being performed in piglet and rat models to better understand its pathogenesis and treatment options. The successful applicant will be involved in both research programs.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

• Humane care for animals includes receiving, feeding, daily care, and post-operative monitoring.
• Assist with experimental preparation and protocols including anesthetizing animals, performing surgeries such as arterial and venous access, intubation or tracheostomy, intracranial pressure monitoring, administering medications, obtaining blood samples, performing detailed hemodynamic intervention protocols.
• Perform and manage isolated complex isolated vessel techniques
• Collaborate with our veterinary colleagues to ensure humane care of animals.
• Work with principal investigators in developing and implementing surgical animal models for complex physiological experiments and provide advice on how to refine experimental procedures related to studies on animals.
• Euthanize animals and process tissues at experimental end points
• Train other technicians, research fellows, residents and students in surgical and isolated vessel techniques related to experimental protocols and basic laboratory procedures. Ensure quality assurance in the performance of surgical techniques.
• Perform data entry and ensure complete and accurate database management.
• Preparing laboratory reagents necessary for tissue processing.
• Attending weekly lab meetings and giving updates on work.
• Attending courses as needed in safety procedures for handling, storage and disposal of biohazardous materials.
• May also include performing simple basic science techniques, such as ELISA assays and immunohistochemistry of tissue.
• Administrative duties include, but are not limited to:
• Timely ordering of supplies, management of inventory, and ensuring needed materials are available for experiments. Ordering and shipping of animals
• General lab organization and management
• Troubleshooting and coordination of repair of lab equipment and devices
• Comprehensive knowledge and maintenance of approved Animal Care and Use Committee
• (ACUC) protocols
• Submission of new ACUC approvals, amendments, and triennial reviews
• Maintain lab equipment and coordinate repairs for large and small animal experiments
• Maintain lab area and clean labware
• Assure that handling of drugs and pain medications is in accordance with regulations and that staff accurately keeps inventory logs.
• Oversee site visits by animal welfare and biosafety regulatory bodies (ACUC, AALAC, USDA)
• Manage supply inventory and coordinate ordering of supplies and shipping of animals.

• Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry, or a related field.
• Five years of related experience, including proven technical knowledge and laboratory experience.
• Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
