North Carolina is experiencing significant growth in its energy sector, driven by the arrival of new manufacturers such as Toyota and Natron Energy. NC State engineering is expanding, with up to 40% growth in faculty, staff, undergraduate, and graduate students expected over the coming years. The College of Engineering has formed the Battery and Energy Storage Initiative to establish the College as a leader in battery and energy storage research, teaching, and innovation including addressing workforce development needs for the next generation of engineers. The College’s ongoing growth in student enrollment and faculty hiring presents a unique opportunity to build expertise in this vital area, which will support both regional economic development and national energy initiatives.

Essential Job Duties

The NC State College of Engineering invites applications for an open rank professional track faculty position in the area of batteries and energy storage. Candidates will primarily support the educational mission of the COE Battery and Energy Storage Initiative. The academic home of the successful candidate will be a suitable department within the College of Engineering. The candidate is welcome to express preference(s) for a home department. The successful candidate will be an active contributor to the Battery and Energy Storage Initiative.

The primary responsibilities of the successful candidate are developing, teaching, and coordinating multidisciplinary courses in batteries and energy storage, including laboratory courses, and developing a battery and energy storage certificate and other programs in consultation with the COE Battery and Energy Storage Initiative leadership. The individual is expected to participate in ABET and student outcome evaluations. The successful candidate will be expected to engage in extension and outreach including connecting and partnering with companies for projects involving students, to aid in student placement, and to aid in student recruitment.

Course and laboratory teaching responsibilities includes:
  • Developing and presenting engaging course content on the topic of batteries and energy storage
  • Developing “hands-on” laboratory modules
  • Developing exams, quizzes, and homework assignments
  • Grading assessments with possible TA support
  • Holding office hours
  • Maintaining up-to-date course platform (e.g. Moodle)
  • Determining and posting course grades

Other responsibilities may vary according to the background and expertise of the candidate. Example responsibilities include connecting with related initiatives in the College of Engineering such as in Applied AI, serving as an academic or career advisor, advising student groups, etc.

Minimum Education and Experience

For Asst./Assoc./Full Teaching Professor: Requires doctorate degree, an equivalent degree, or equivalent professional experience.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Experience with battery and energy storage research and/or education.
  • Excellent teaching skills
  • Excellent verbal and writing skills are required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the vision and mission of NC State and the College of Engineering.
  • Experience in teaching or working with students at the college or university level.
  • Experience in partnering with or working in industry
